Fastolf commanded the supply wagons to charge directly into the ambushers.
The English, suspecting an ambush, had loaded the wagons with concealed men-at-arms rather than supplies.
The language barrier between the French and Scottish soldiers created confusion over which wagon to attack first, buying the English vital time to load up their cannons and repel the attackers.
The attacking forces were foiled by exploding barrels of slippery herring.
