More than one million homes and business can get a government-funded internet upgrade - check if you can

More than one million properties are due to get government-funded internet upgrades, and a new tool has been launched to tell you if you can get one.

The Project Gigabit scheme aims to bring gigabit-capable broadband, which offers faster and more reliable internet, to hard-to-reach rural areas.

The programme launched in 2021, but the rate of upgrades being delivered is now at its fastest, with more than 750 homes and businesses being reached a day, ministers have said.

Through a deal struck with Openreach worth up to £1.2bn, engineers are bringing full fibre broadband upgrades to properties in more than 100 rural towns and villages across England and Wales.

An online address checker, which you can find here, has been launched to allow people to enter their postcode and instantly see if their home or business is included in rollout plans.

This could be under Project Gigabit or commercial programmes led by telecoms companies.

Telecoms minister Liz Lloyd said: "Many rural communities have long struggled to do even the basics online due to slow internet speeds. Now, hundreds of households and companies are receiving government-funded upgrades every day - helping those who would otherwise miss out."
